ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Fionn Regan - End Of History (Bella Union)
We loved Fionn when we saw him support Midlake (see Fionn ) and we were right as this album is the highlight of the year. Theres not a duff track included in these bittersweet melodies. From simple guitar and vocal of Be Good of Be Gone to the accompanied Black Water Child these could not be more beautiful if they came with a bouncing newborn baby each. Buy this album if you only buy one record this year. Classic.

BEST OF THE REST THIS MONTH

Lambchop - Damaged ( City Slang)
Lambchop seem to have scaled down the soulful approach of recent years to become quieter and more laid back with each release. This album is so understated it could almost be a John Cage piece in places. Highlights include opening track Paperback Bible and Beer Before the Barbican. If you are super quick you get an EP of different mixes and new songs. Late night listening for people who’ve had too many late nights.

Young Knives - Voies of Animals & Men (Transgressive)
Young Knives spikey pop singles translate well to this album and the Milton Keynes trio could be the new contenders for the zany English pop crown that was once worn by the likes of XTC and Robyn Hytchcock. Top tunes, insane lyrics and if you get the version with a free DVD, even more bonkers accompanying videos. Recommended.
